Mary-Jane Jackson graduated from Becker Junior College in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1957 with an Associate's degree in Medical Secretarial Science. She married Perry "Tim" Dean Dodds, a heavy equipment operator from North Hero, Vermont in 1957 and they moved to Milford, Connecticut where their daughter, Lora Mary "Lorrie" was born on April 11, 1958. In June of 1958 they returned to Vermont where two more daughters were born, Tamora Elizabeth "Tammy" on September 9, 1959 and Audrey May on May 11, 1965. They rented in Burlington for five years where they were both employed.

In 1963, they moved to Milton into the newly remodeled home where her maternal grandparents had lived. Mary-Jane was with the Department of Pharmacology in the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont for nearly 20 years.

Mary-Jane and Tim were divorced in 1976 and in 1980 she moved with her youngest daughter, Audrey, to St. Petersburg, Florida where she could be near her aging parents and accept a mid-life career challenge. After several positions in industry, she was the executive secretary to the medical director of Horizon Hospital. Later, in 1983, she began to subcontract medical transcription on a part-time basis. She now returns every summer to Vermont to her camp, "Three Seasons," on the Georgia Shore which she purchased in 1991
