Ulrich left Vermont and went to work in Ingram, Pennsylvania as a carpenter. He later went to Massachusetts and worked there, staying with relatives in Paxton and Worcester. Ulrich's first wife was Josephine King whom he married on May 30, 1884, in Worcester, Mass. Ulrich's father officiated the wedding. Sadly, Josephine died four years later, on Dec. 23, 1888, and is buried in the King family plot in Putnam, CT. She and Ulrich had no children. The King family came to the Putnam area in the 1850's from Quebec. Once in the States, they changed the surname from Roi to King. The Kings were members of the Methodist church in Putnam and may have influenced Ulrich to later name his son, Wesley.

While in Worcester, he met and married a childhood sweetheart, Bertha Murray. The Murray family had lived on a farm on West Hill in Montgomery near the J.D. Rossier farm and had moved to Worcester. Ulrich and Bertha were married in 1893. On August 6, 1895 their only child, Wesley, was born. They settled in Clinton, Massachusetts.

Ulrich had only a 6th grade education but was a clever handyman and became a successful carpenter. He also liked to think of himself as an amateur inventor. Bertha died in 1925 and Ulrich married again later that year. Ulrich and his wife, May, bought a small farm in Windham, New Hampshire where Ulrich spent the rest of his life.

Buried: Keene, N.H.
