Elsie Rossier lived her early life in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. She married John C. Smith who was a cousin related to J.D. Rossier's second wife, Celina. John became a minister and he went out to Los Angeles. He liked it so well he moved his family there about 1916. John did some preaching and worked at odd jobs but times were hard. He made only a meager living for the large family. Elsie's half-sister, Clara, lived with her at times after Clara's husband died. Their son,Gene, lived with them after his discharge from the U.S. Army. His pension helped pay family expenses until the Great Depression led to the cancellation of all military pensions.
