Harriet Rossier, (called Hattie by the family), went to Mexico as a missionary. While there, she met James Geddes whom she later married. They lived in Fitchburg, Massachusetts where he worked in a factory. James also tried his hand as an inventor. His success at this is not known, but there are indications that some manufacturers were interested in some of his ideas.

They later moved to Guadalajara, Mexico and lived there for several years. In 1915, they moved to Los Angeles, California to escape the Mexican Revolution and the escapades of Pancho Villa. They had three children.
