Donald was educated in the Fitchburg Public Schools. He graduated from Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. He received his Master's degree from Newton Theological Seminary. On December 30, 1930, he married Evelyn Patrin in a ceremony performed by his father. Donald was ordained as a minister in 1931.

Donald and Evelyn went to the Phillippine Islands as missionaries for seven years. They had two sons, Duane and Bruce, both born in the Phillipines. When his father died, they came back to Massachusetts and took over his father's church, then Ennel Street Baptist Church in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was also the pastor of churches in Thomaston, Maine and Antrim, New Hampshire. Donald served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Army in Trinidad, Texas, and Florida. Donald died December 17, 1948 in New Hampshire. Evelyn died April 8, 1965. They are both buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C..
