Richard worked for a few years as a member of the Vermont State Police and was also stationed in the Bellow Falls area.

He married Dorothy and had a daughter, Janet.

Richard and Dorothy were later divorced and Richard's second marriage was to Gloria. They moved to Florida where Richard got a civil service job. Being an accomplished airplane pilot, he was hired to train pilots for the military. In 1948, he was training a cadet from Saxtons River, Vermont when a Naval aircraft collided with their plane. Richard and the cadet were both killed. He is buried in Massachusetts.
