Paul was born February 26, 1883 in Montgomery Center, Vermont. He married Alice McGowan but she died at the age of 18 from childbirth. He never remarried or had children. As a young man, he went to Fitchburg, Massachusetts and got employment with the Jennison Plumbing Company of Fitchburg. During the time Paul worked there, the company got a contract to install a steam plant at the Boston & Maine railroad car shops near Lowell.

Paul moved into a lodging house to be near his job. The lady who ran the boarding house usually woke him each morning by rapping on his door. One morning, there was no response so she opened the door. She found Paul unconscious and the room full of gas. She called an ambulance and Paul was immediately taken to St. Johns Hospital in Lowell. He died a few minutes after arrival. This was February 14, 1914, just a few days before his 31st birthday. Paul is buried in the Montgomery Center Cemetery.
