Lena May Rossier was born November 25, 1877 in Montgomery Center, Vermont. She and her older sister, Lillian, were very close as they were only about a year and a half apart. They were together almost constantly.

In 1887 a terrible epidemic of diptheria struck their community in northern Vermont. Both girls became ill with the dreaded disease and Lena died just a month before her tenth birthday. Lillian was spared and gradually recovered. This was evidently an unforgettable loss for the parents and especially for Lillian who had become so attached to her sister.
