Ralph, Jr. (Sonny) was born in Clinton, Massachusetts on May 4, 1936. He attended Boston Public Schools while growing up in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

He served 20 years in the U.S Marine Corps Reserves as an Air Traffic Controller and worked for Shaws' Supermarkets in their warehouse. He married Margaret (Peggy) on July 10, 1965. They lived in Brockton, Massachusetts where they had four children: James born in 1966, Thomas born in 1969, Salina (Sally) born in 1970, and Steven born in 1970.

Ralph died in an automobile accident on his way home from work Halloween, 1985. He is buried in Canton, Massachusetts. Peggy moved to West Bridgewater, Massachusetts to care for her mother.
