As a young man, Arthur worked on the Hiawatha Farm in Coventry, Vermont with his father and brothers. He attended Newport High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newport. After he married Evelyn, they purchased a farm of their own in Westmore, Vermont.

He was married for only about two years when he lost his life in Willoughby Lake while saving a friend from drowning. The Carnegie Medal for Heroism was awarded to Evelyn for her husband's act of bravery. Arthur is buried at the East Main Street Cemetery in Newport, Vermont.

Evelyn married again to Clarence Brandon who operated a garage on East Main Street in Newport. They had a daughter named Phyllis. Phyllis got married and had twin boys, one of whom died at a young age. Evelyn's husband, Clarence also died after a few years into their marriage. Evelyn went on to marry Amos Metcalf and they lived in Los Angeles, California for many years until Evelyn died in 1994.
