My Childhood Memories Of Samuel
by his brother, Gifford

My brother, Sam, was four years older but we attended school together for a few years. The school house was only about a quarter of a mile down the road from our house. Living that close to the school, my folks would often board and room the teacher.

One Fall, a new teacher came to stay with us. I was in about the 3rd or 4th grade. She was the largest woman I had ever seen! I remember the first day of school as she pulled herself up the concrete steps by the iron railing, (which broke out of the concrete later that year). She looked like a force that I wouldn't want to reckon with. She always carried a bag of books and on top of the books lay a piece of rubber hose nearly two feet long and about an inch in diameter. Both ends were sticking out of the tip of the bag which made it very conspicuous. There was no doubt in our minds that this was the intended weapon to be used on unruly pupils.

Sam seemed to think that for some reason there might come a day when he could fall into that category. He wasn't about to take a chance. Some precautionary measures must be taken without delay. When the teacher wasn't close by, Sam took his trusty little jack-knife and cut the hose in the center almost all the way through. When he held it up by one end, it just hung helplessly limp. He carefully replaced it with both ends sticking out of the top of the bag.

I don't remember anything ever being said about this but I do remember that the hose was absent from the teacher's bag the rest of the year. After that, it seemed to me the school was a much safer place for all of us.
